It’s Friday, March 17, 2023. While Friday is not necessarily my favorite day of the week, I often use it as a progress marker to note the end of the traditional work week. My hope is that I am also still alive and sane. Today, I am! This Friday is also St. Patrick’s Day here in the United States and around the
world. St. Patrick’s Day, or Lá Fhéile Pádraig in Irish, honors the fifth-century namesake and Ireland’s shamrock-loving patron saint, who died on this date in 461 CE.
The focus of this post, however, is to share how this annual celebration is gaining in popularity around the world. The holiday celebrates Irish cultural heritage, which in itself is ironic considering Patrick himself wasn’t Irish. Nor was Patrick his real name. Suffice it to say that he may not have been born Irish, but he died Irish.
The other thing that I want to bring to your attention are the number of iconic landmarks around the world that take on a green hue to give respect to the Irish. [See statue of Jesus Christ the Redeemer in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, above.]
Some other famous global landmarks that take on a green hue on St. Patrick’s Day are The Pyramids at Giza and The Sphinx, the fountain on the south lawn of the White House, the Opera House in Sydney, Australia, the London Eye, the Chicago River, and the top of the Empire State Building in New York.
Whatever you do today, have a safe and happy St. Patrick’s Day.
