Today is Earth Day 2023! It Is Also Earth Week and Month

Today is Earth Day! We’ve been observing Earth Day since 1970. Like many special holidays and annual events, Earth Day has grown over the years to Earth Week (the week that includes Earth Day) and Earth Month or April.

I am not sure when Earth Day evolved into Earth Week and Earth Month, but here’s one thing I do know: Earth Day, Week, or Month should be observed every day. Why? Like Black History and Women’s History Months, there are important issues that impact Mother Earth every day of the year and not only one day, week, or month in April.

This year, as with previous years, Mother Earth finds herself in a world of hurt.

Warsan Shire, says so aptly in her poem – What They Did Yesterday Afternoon:

they set my aunts house on fire
i cried the way women on tv do
folding at the middle
like a five pound note.
i called the boy who use to love me
tried to ‘okay’ my voice
i said hello
he said warsan, what’s wrong, what’s happened?

i’ve been praying,
and these are what my prayers look like;
dear god
i come from two countries
one is thirsty
the other is on fire
both need water.

later that night
i held an atlas in my lap
ran my fingers across the whole world
and whispered
where does it hurt?

it answered
everywhere
everywhere
everywhere.

What are you doing this Earth Day, Earth Week, Earth Month, and Earth Year to ease Mother Earth’s pains?
